Stop the £55 Million A701 Relief Road

The Issue

Midlothian Council has submitted a £55 million plan (25/00521/DPP) for a “A701 Relief Road” — but the evidence shows it will make congestion and environmental problems worse, not better.

Why We Oppose the Relief Road

🚗 More Traffic, Not Less: The Council’s own data shows the scheme will increase traffic at the Straiton roundabout, Straiton Retail Park, and the A701/Burdiehouse junction.
🏫 Unsafe for Schools: Traffic on the A703 will almost double, sending an estimated 6,000 additional vehicles through the new Beeslack Replacement High School site — along a narrow, flood-prone road.
🌧️ Higher Flood Risk: Unrestricted drainage into Boghall Burn and Pentland Burn will increase flood risk downstream in Bilston and Burdiehouse.
🌿 Loss of Greenbelt & Wildlife Habitat: Prime farmland and wetland will be destroyed, harming biodiversity, rural livelihoods, and climate resilience.
🚶 No Real Active Travel Solution: The road has no provision for buses and will divide communities like Bilston, Damhead, and Loanhead — cutting them off from Easter Bush and active travel routes.
💷 Poor Use of Public Money: With vital projects like the new Beeslack High School underfunded, why spend £55 million on a road that worsens congestion?

Questionable Claimed Benefits

The Council’s claimed benefits rely on other developments — many not approved or already addressed elsewhere:
  • Easing congestion depends on the contested Sheriffhall upgrade (not yet granted planning permission).
  • The £189 million “economic boost” is based on outdated data from before the approval of the A702/Bush Loan roundabout.
  • Expansion at Easter Bush has already been enabled without this road.
  • The “Sustainable Travel Corridor” is a separate project, not part of this scheme.

Local Opinion

Community feedback from Bilston, Roslin, Loanhead, Penicuik, and Damhead shows little to no public support. There is no evidence of backing from local businesses or the University of Edinburgh.

To ease congestion we need better active travel infrastructure and better public transport. Fewer cars, not more.

This scheme will increase traffic at Straiton and cause even greater congestion than at present.

I'm 63 years old and I've seen dozens of roads built, widened, "improved" etc. with the declared aim of "easing congestion"- the one thing that all these schemes have in common is that none of them have worked ! Within a few years, the traffic on the additional road has reached capacity and congestion is as bad as ever. This one will be just the same. There is a better way to address congestion, building roads is not the answer

It appears that this proposal will have a negative impact on active travel to the south of Edinburgh, which is an area so valuable to me and others. It doesn't seem to solve the problem it is intended to address and it will have several other drawbacks.

Name one relief road that has reduced traffic demand, they only make it worse, in a climate Emergency!

Closeness to quiet countryside is one thing that makes Edinburgh a great city. This road will destroy that peace, and improve access for no-one.

New roads just increase demand and shift the bottleneck to a different junction.

The road seems to offer no sensible releif, except that cars no longer need to travel one more section of bypass to reach the A702! It may only increase traffic

New roads have never solved congestion and never will, they only induce more traffic, making the problem worse. Nowhere in the world has a new road solved congestion. Instead, we need to do the opposite and reduce road capacity for cars and prioritise buses, trams, cycles, and pedestrians. A congestion charge, or pay-per-use charges, need to be introduced if we are serious about reducing congestion.
