Stop the £55 Million A701 Relief Road

The Issue

Midlothian Council has submitted a £55 million plan (25/00521/DPP) for a “A701 Relief Road” — but the evidence shows it will make congestion and environmental problems worse, not better.

Why We Oppose the Relief Road

🚗 More Traffic, Not Less: The Council’s own data shows the scheme will increase traffic at the Straiton roundabout, Straiton Retail Park, and the A701/Burdiehouse junction.
🏫 Unsafe for Schools: Traffic on the A703 will almost double, sending an estimated 6,000 additional vehicles through the new Beeslack Replacement High School site — along a narrow, flood-prone road.
🌧️ Higher Flood Risk: Unrestricted drainage into Boghall Burn and Pentland Burn will increase flood risk downstream in Bilston and Burdiehouse.
🌿 Loss of Greenbelt & Wildlife Habitat: Prime farmland and wetland will be destroyed, harming biodiversity, rural livelihoods, and climate resilience.
🚶 No Real Active Travel Solution: The road has no provision for buses and will divide communities like Bilston, Damhead, and Loanhead — cutting them off from Easter Bush and active travel routes.
💷 Poor Use of Public Money: With vital projects like the new Beeslack High School underfunded, why spend £55 million on a road that worsens congestion?

Questionable Claimed Benefits

The Council’s claimed benefits rely on other developments — many not approved or already addressed elsewhere:
  • Easing congestion depends on the contested Sheriffhall upgrade (not yet granted planning permission).
  • The £189 million “economic boost” is based on outdated data from before the approval of the A702/Bush Loan roundabout.
  • Expansion at Easter Bush has already been enabled without this road.
  • The “Sustainable Travel Corridor” is a separate project, not part of this scheme.

Local Opinion

Community feedback from Bilston, Roslin, Loanhead, Penicuik, and Damhead shows little to no public support. There is no evidence of backing from local businesses or the University of Edinburgh.

The problems result from inadequately managed greenfield housing development with inadequate facilities.
The answer should begin with significant improvements to public transport, not the facilitation of more car journeys.

This is a waste of £55m that would be much better spent on active travel and public transport.
It's 2025, the planet is burning, and the best thing we find to do is build another road that will only induce more polluting cars. Pure madness and a slap in the face of the next generations.

I'm signing because the loss of natural habitat ans the increased congestion will make living in the area even more busy ans thd roads more hellish than they already are.

I’m signing as active travel and public transport needs improving in the area before any new roads are built that will make active travel and public transport less attractive. Some of the most vulnerable in our society rely on buses to travel (eg elderly, young and disabled).
Whilst active travellers (eg walkers, wheelers and cyclists) are some of the most vulnerable and unsafe on ever more roads.

The problem is too many cars

This proposed road project is a total waste of public money, we have over 60 years of evidence to show that such road projects only cause more problems, they are not a solution to congestion or anything else.

It is time that Midlothian Council grew up and look at serious alternatives, instead of trying to create even more car dependency. The problem they are trying to solve is one of their own making and cannot be solved by continuing to make the same mistakes again and again.

Do don't tackle congestion, air pollution and climate change by building more roads.

The destruction of yet more green space is abhorrent and wrong.

It’s ridiculous to be losing green belt when the traffic congestion won’t be improved.
